Claire Parkinson Inducted into Academy of Arts and Sciences
NASA Scientist one of eight inductees in Astronomy and Earth Sciences
Claire L. Parkinson of NASA Goddard Space Flight Center was honored in April 2018 with membership into the Mathematical and Physical Sciences Class of the Academy of Arts and Sciences along with just seven other Astronomy and Earth Sciences inductees. Claire has a Ph.D. in geography / climatology from Ohio State University following her math degree from Wellesley. Her focus has been on climate change, particularly the connections between polar sea ice and the rest of the climate system, using satellite remote sensing. Using these techniques, she has been able to ersearch the very different time series of sea ice changes between the two polar regions. Her work has been used for applications including weather forecasting and forest fire detection. She has authored 15 books, including Coming Climate Crisis? Consider the Past, Beware the Big Fix.
